Newport, RI - Louis Jennings, 88, of Heatherwood Health Care Center, Newport, RI, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the center. Born in Lowell, MA on October 18, 1917, he was the son of the late Peter and Maria Kotsifakos Gianarakos.Mr. Jennings graduated in 1936 from Central High School in Washington, DC. He then went on to attend Corcoran Gallery School of Art in Washington and for a while he worked as an illistrator of editorial cartoons. Mr. Jennings served in the Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945 reaching the rank of Master Sargent. In 1948, Mr. Jennings started in the Restaurant Business at H . Hicks Son on 57th Street in New York City. He was famous for his elegant and somewhat outrageous ice cream creations. His passion for perfection in the preparation of food together with his truly unique personality made a visit to his restaurant an unforgettable experience. He went on to H. Hicks new location at 49th Street from 1952 to 1968. In 1969 he opened his own business Old Fashioned Mr. Jennings at the Bonwit Teller Department Store on 5th Avenue in New York City. In 1980 he moved out of Bonwit Tellers to open his new location at West 55th and 12th Avenue. Mr. Jennings retired in 1988 and moved back home to live with his son Peter in Newport. He is survived by his son Peter Jennings of Boynton Beach, FL, his sister Georgia G. Young of Newport, RI, his niece Marina V. Young-Kelly of Bristol, RI, nephews Ted Young and Chris Young of Newport, RI, he leaves his great nieces Sandra, Stephanie and Nicole, and his great-great niece Zoe, and great-great nephew Sam, and his friend Theadora. A Prayer service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006, at 4pm, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held on Saturday afternoon from 3-4pm. Burial will take place in the Palm Beach Memorial Park, Lantana, FL.Donations in his memory may be made to St. Spyridon?s Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport, RI 02840
