Lieutenant General William Sheridan Flynn ("Sher" to Newporters, "Bill" to others) passed away on Memorial Day, May 25, 2015, at his daughter Erin's home, with his wife and daughters at his side. Sher was born in Newport on November 17, 1936, to the late John J. Flynn and Dorothy (Fleming) Flynn of Newport. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years and "very best friend" of 62 years: Lynn Egan Flynn of Newport, as well as his five daughters: Erin Flynn of Newport, Chyleene (Jack) O'Connor of Middletown, Keely (Paul) Connery of West Hartford, CT, Deirdre (Tim) Shope of Pittsburgh, PA, and Tara (Brian) Frates of Santa Monica, CA. He is also survived by his brother and "best buddy" John J. Flynn, Jr. (Mary) of Newport and Coronado, CA. He is predeceased by his beloved Aunt Monica Fleming Owens and Uncle Francis J. Owens. He will be remembered by his grandchildren for his subtle sense of humor and devilish charm, but mostly as a kind, loving, and wise Pop Pop. The kids he so adores, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, will carry him in their hearts forever: Kevin and Oliver Flynn Jantz; Meghan, Jay, Addie and Jackson Ford; Cate and Kelsey O'Connor; Micaela, Cally and Keenan Connery; Connor, Maggie and Monica Shope; and Owen Frates. He leaves numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, friends and nieces and nephews whom he cherished. We are heartbroken by the loss of our hero, the wonderful man who influenced each of us in a profound way. We will find comfort in our memories of Pop: Irish songs, wild dances, the Flynn Olympics, discussions of current events over dinner, shopping trips for special occasions, and so much more.He graduated from De La Salle Academy in 1953 and from Providence College in 1957. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He also holds a Master of Science in International Relations from George Washington University. Bill began his Army career as a second lieutenant of Infantry and within 17 months assumed command of an Infantry company at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Thereafter he received his Regular Army commission as an Ordnance Officer. During his 35 years in the US Army, he held a wide variety of positions culminating with his assignment as Commanding General 21st Theater Army Area Command, which supported the deployment of an Army corps during Operation Desert Shield and provided logistics support to the Republic of Turkey for Operations Desert Shield and Provide Comfort. Throughout the course of his service, he held other key assignments including Commander, Division Support Command of the 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, where he was also the only Ordnance Officer who ever served as the Chief of Staff for the 4th Infantry Division. His many military awards and decorations include the German Armys Cross of Honor, the Belgian Order of The Crown, and the Dutch Armys Cross of Honor for Merit. All three medals are the highest awards given to foreign military officers. He retired from the Army in 1992 and began a second career as the Deputy Director of the "Big Dig" in Boston, MA. In this position, he was one of a three member management team who built the 3rd Harbor Tunnel and Depressed Central Artery. While his family proudly shares the details of his exceptional career, he would hope that he simply be remembered as "A Soldier's Soldier". As we prepare this history, many of his children and grandchildren are learning of his accomplishments for the first time. In fact, Lieutenant General Flynn's favorite titles of all were "Daddy", "Pop Pop", and, of course, "Sher Dahlin".
