Lucia M. Arruda

Lucia M. (Amaral) Arruda, 63, of Peleg Road, Portsmouth, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 7, 2016.She was the beloved wife of Jack Arruda.Born in Newport, RI on June 24, 1953, she is the daughter of Ermelinda (Andrade) Amaral of Newport, RI and the late Jose Amaral.Mrs. Arruda was a 1971 graduate of Rogers High School in Newport and continued with her education by receiving her Bachelors of Arts and Master's Degree in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island, and a second Master's Degree in Taxation from Bryant College. She was a well-respected and loved Professor of Accounting for more than 20 years at Bryant College and Salve Regina University. In addition to being a Board Certified Public Accountant, she received numerous awards for her teaching and service to the community.In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by her son, Nicholas Arruda of Portsmouth, RI; her daughter, Elise Arruda Laorenza and her husband, Alexander, of Barrington, RI; her sister, Flora Kirchart and her husband John Rooney; her brothers, Joe Amaral, Carlos Amaral and his wife, Alicia, Frank Amaral and his wife, Liz, and Mike Amaral; her sister-in-law, Linda Kuhn; her grandchildren, Kevin Arruda, Nola Laorenza and Gray Laorenza; and five nieces and seven nephews.Calling hours will be held on Thursday August 11, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Her funeral service will be held on Friday August 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in Memorial Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of RI, 245 Waterman St # 306, Providence, RI 02906 or to the Santa's Helpers team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's (www.alz.org/ri)."The heart holds what the mind cannot."
