Mabel G. Allen

Mabel G. Allen, 98, of Burdick Avenue, Newport, RI, died Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the John Clarke Hospice Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.She was the wife of the late Dean Melville Allen.Born in Newport, RI on February 20, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Hedley James and Mabel Kessell Greer.Mabel was a 1930 graduate of Rogers High School. She was an avid traveler, traveling to Northern, Southern and Central Europe and had visited Ireland five times. Mrs. Allen was a consummate gardener from dawn til dusk tending to her flowers. Mabel adored cats and always had one or more. She sadly left behind her two loving cats, Bruiser and Tuffy.She is survived by her nieces Gail A. Greer of Newport, RI and Carol J. McCarthy of Albuquerque, NM, her nephews Patrick McCarthy and his wife Susan of Albuquerque, NM and Robert McCarthy and his wife Cheryl of Albuquerque, NM.She was the sister of the late Albert J. Greer, Hedley William Greer, and Barbara G. McCarthy.Her funeral service will be held on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 2 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial and committal prayers will follow in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Monday afternoon, September 21, 2009 from 1-2 pm prior to the funeral service.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
