Newport, RI - Madeline Miller, 77, of 34 Slocum Street, Newport, RI, died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at John Clarke Retirement Center in Middletown, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newport, RI on April 22, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Grace Stenhouse Miller.Madeline was a 1948 graduate of Rogers High School in Newport. She was a past parishioner of St. Georges Episcopal Church in Newport where she served on the Vestry and Altar Guild and took part in many church activities including the Thrift Shop and soup kitchen. After St. Georges closing, she continued her fellowship and service to God as a member of St. Marys Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, RI. She worked for forty years in local banks starting at Newport National Bank, but spent the bulk of her professional career in the mortgage and loan department of the Bank of Newport, now BankNewport. After her retirement in 1992, she pursued iterests in gardening, sewing and baking but more importantly in doing for others as a volunteer at Newport Hospital. She is survived by her brothers Robert Miller and his wife Claire of Coventry, RI and Lauder Miller and his wife Estelle of Winnisquam, NH her nieces Gail, Lisa and Jessica all of Florida, Rachel of Massachusetts and Rebecca of New Hampshire and nephews John McAskill of Philadelphia, PA and Scout McAskill of Newport, RI. Her many devoted grand nieces and nephews also survive her.She was the sister of the late Roberta Miller McAskill. Never one to complain or think of herself first, she will be deeply missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched through her kind and giving spirit.A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at 11:00 am in St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Marys Episcopal Church Altar Guild, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
