Manuel J. "Brother" Mello Jr., 90 of Middletown, died Sunday, July 19, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family.He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Parvo) Mello.Born in Portsmouth, RI, on April 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Manuel T. and Eva B. (Perry) Mello.Mr. Mello served in the United States Army during World War II and was involved in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He received a number of military combat awards including the Purple Heart and was inducted into the French Legion of Honor in April 2015. He was an equipment operator for Mello Construction Company Inc., for 30 years, retiring in 1967 and also worked for 20 years at the Naval Base at NUSC retiring in 1986. He was a communicant of Jesus Savior Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Vasco da Gama. He was very active in town affairs and a regular attendee at Middletown Town Council meetings. He was also a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his daughters Cheryl Mello of Snead's Ferry, NC, Kathleen Squire and her husband Robert of Peru, NY, his brother John R. "Bob" Mello and his wife Betty of Middletown, his sister E. Betty Lopes of Portsmouth, his grandchildren Thomas Cook, Rachel Cook, Cory Mello and Ryan Squire, his great-grandchild Camden Casteen, sisters-in-law Margaret "Peggy" Mello and Frances Mello, brother-in-law George E. Silvia, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephewsHe was the brother of the late George J. Mello, Mary Silvia, and Frank P. "Mickey" Mello. He also leaves his many close friends. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 4:00pm - 7:00 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Savior Church, 509 Broadway, Newport.
