Manuel J. ?Shorty? Soares, 88, of 55 Mare Terrace, Portsmouth, RI died Wednesday, October 19, 2005, surrounded by his family, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, in Fall River, MA. He was the husband of Mary Beirola Soares. Born in Portsmouth, RI, on May 28, 1917, he was the son of the late Jose and Justina Rego Soares.Mr. Soares was a self employed farmer who ran the Soares Produce Stand on East Main Road, at the foot of Sprague Street, selling his produce and dairy products for years at that location as well as the Farmers Market in Fall River, MA. Mr. Soares was also a member of the Portsmouth Concerned Citizens. Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his son Manuel Joseph Soares of Portsmouth, RI, his daughters, Mary Lou Sylvia of Tiverton, RI, Elaine M. Aguiar of Somerset, MA, and Joyce A. Rolfe of Portsmouth, RI, his brothers Joseph Soares of Attleboro, MA, and Antone Soares of Portsmouth, RI, his grandson Shawn Rolfe of Portsmouth, RI, his granddaughters Erica Soares of Portsmouth, RI, Michelle Aguiar and Ashley Aguiar both of Providence, RI, Stephanie Morris and Jennifer Rolfe both of Portsmouth, RI, and four great grandchildren, Kayson Soares, Kylee Morris, Alyssa Arruda and Dennis Arruda, all of Portsmouth.He is preceded in death by his brother, Frank Soares, and four sisters, Helen Silvia, Clara Gomes, Adeline Faria, and Mary Soares.His funeral will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2005, at 8:00AM from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian burial, at 9:00AM, in St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Burial will be in Portsmouth Cemetery in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 21, 2005, from 2-4PM and 7-9PM in the funeral home.
