Portsmouth, RI - Manuel Jesse Alvanas, 76, of 110 Jepson Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Joan Ann Frazier Alvanas. Born in Newport, RI on March 20, 1931, he was the son of Mary Raposa Alvanas of Tiverton, RI, and the late Manuel J. Alvanas.Mr. Alvanas served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the Destroyer DD780 STORMES, from 1952 till 1955. After the service he owned and operated M. J. Alvanas Plastering for 27 years. Manny was a member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus. He loved salt water fishing and going camping with his family, up and down the east coast and helping his wife cook whatever was caught. Besides his wife and mother he is survived by his son Jesse J. Alvanas of Middletown, RI, and his daughter Darlene M. Silvia of Portsmouth, RI, his grandchildren Jeffrey A. Alvanas, Kristine L. Alvanas, Christopher A. Silvia and Daniel P. Silvia, and his brothers Frank Alvanas of Tiverton, RI, and Stephen Alvanas of Knoxville, TN. He was the brother of the late Josephine Tiffault. His funeral will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at 11:00 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home. Donations in his memory may be made to Ataxia MJD Research Project Inc., 1425 Alvarado Avenue, Burlingame, CA 94010.
