Middletown, RI - Manuel L. Leander, 89, of 32 Bayview Park, Middletown, RI, died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at home.He was the husband of the late Evelyn Mary Moitoza Leander. Born in Middletown, RI on May 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Antone and Recada Soueria Leander.Mr. Leander owned and operated Leander Painting Co. for 43 years, retiring in 1980. He served in the Army during WWII. Manny was a former Middletown Town Council member from 1955 to 1963 and a former Middletown Republican Town Committee Member from 1950 to 1955. He was a member of the Middletown Lions Club since 1952, a member of the Middletown K of C council 4203, a member of the Seven Castles Club of Newport County, a member of the Portsmouth and Middletown Senior Citizens and a member of St. Lucys Church. Mr. Leander was an avid skier in New Hampshire. He is survived by his sister Albertina Reiter of Delaware and Newport, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.He was the brother of the late Joseph Leander, Anthony Leander, William Leander, Mary Paz, Julia Leander and Louise Roderigues. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 8:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00AM in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport, RI.Committal prayers and military honors will follow at St. Columba Cemetery.Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010, from 5-7in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services Hospice Care of Newport and Bristol Counties, 118 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
