USN 83, of 283 Forest Avenue Middletown, died Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Mary DeMello Chantre of Middletown, RI Born in New Bedford, MA on February 17, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas and Alda Oliveira Chantre.Mr. Chantre was a member of the United States Navy for 21 years. He was discharged in 1962. He worked at NUSC as an engineer and also a technical writer retiring again in 1982. Mr. Chantre was a coach in Middletown and Tiverton for 7 years. He was also active in coaching at the Portsmouth Abbey School.Mr. Chantre was a member of the Whalers of Fairhaven, MA Football Team. He and his wife were members of Friends of Ballroom Dancing. He is survived by his wife Mary Chantre of Middletown, RI, and two sons Anthony and James Chantre both of Jacksonville, FL. His brother Henry Chantre of Florida., and also his Sister Alda Ruthier of St. Sioux Marie, MI, and 2 Granddaughters.His funeral will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at 9:30 from the Chapel of Hope on the Newport Naval Base, Newport, Rhode Island 02840. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
