Marea Elena Lewis was born on November 14, 1949, in Newport, RI, to Olga and Vios Lewis of 7 Princeton Street. Marea loved her hometown and never wanted to live anywhere but "on the island." As years went on, she became a comprehensive source of information for all things relating to Newport and was always eager to share her knowledge with friends, family, and even strangers in town.
Marea was a hard worker, beginning her first career in the family restaurant, The Embassy, where she wore many hats, including hostess, waitress, and cook. She also handled several administrative tasks such as bookkeeping, hiring, and advertising. The Embassy was a very popular restaurant in Newport for many years. Marea was so proud of her family's business and its contribution to the local culture. Many musicians would stop in after the festivals, and autographed posters of them adorned the walls.
Marea is perhaps best remembered for her life-long career as a teacher and school guidance counselor. Having achieved her Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees in Education from the University of Rhode Island, Marea taught all grade levels. When recently asked which grade was her favorite, she smiled and replied, "All of them." She loved kids and loved helping them learn, no matter where she encountered them - in school, in church, at family gatherings, and more.
Antiques, especially fine linens, also played a special role in Marea's life. Marea participated in many shows throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, showcasing her appreciation and love for beautiful linens, vintage jewelry and handbags.
Lastly, many will fondly remember Marea for her tireless volunteer efforts at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and her generosity of time and resources bringing food to elderly shut-ins in Newport. She was a loving, compassionate, and thoughtful person, yet at the same time a very independent and private woman. She was never one to ask for help, not wanting to impose on others.
Marea left this life where she began it, in Newport, on January 15, 2025. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother James Lewis. She leaves behind her sister-in-law Debbe Lewis, her niece Julia Lewis, her nephew Christopher Lewis and his wife Elizabeth, and a brother, Sturgis Lewis. Her loss is also mourned by her two godsons, Zachary Zoulias and George Zoulias, many first, second, and third cousins, and countless friends.
