Margaret Ann (Maurer Debethune

Margaret Ann (Maurer) deBethune, 88, of Newport died Thursday, October 22, 2015 at John Clarke Health Care Center of Middletown, RI. Born on August 8, 1927 in Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clark Lewis and Margaret A. (Carmody) Maurer. She is predeceased by her husband, Professor Andre J. deBethune, and her brother James Clarke Maurer. Mrs. deBethune was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy, and Northeastern University, where she received an associate degree in Respiratory Therapy. She worked for twenty years as a respiratory therapist at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, MA. In retirement she was an active member of the League of Women Voters and served as president; she also served as a volunteer at Lucys Hearth and at Newport Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and researching her family genealogy.She is survived by ten children, Martha A. Ginty of Newport, RI, Agnes M .deBethune of Jersey City, NJ, Peter F. deBethune of St. Albans, ME, Christopher deBethune of Los Lunas, NM, Elizabeth R. deBethune of Yonkers, NY, Joseph M .deBethune of Northfield, MA, Marie T. deBethune of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, Anne M. deBethune of Jamestown, RI, Stephen C.L. deBethune of Moscow, Russia and Sara K. deBethune of Somerville, MA. In addition she is survived by twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildrenCalling hours will be held on Friday, November 20, 2015, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 10:00am in St. Joseph's Church, Broadway, Newport.Her burial will take place in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to John Clarke Nursing Center, 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
