- Margaret Hope Beck, 61, of 0422 Narragansett Ave, Prudence Island, formerly of Rockville, Rhode Island, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Allan DeWitt Beck. Born in Providence, RI on November 2, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Felix William and Margaret E. Paterson Banahan. Mrs. Beck was raised in Cranston and Prudence Island where she met her husband Allan.She was a graduate of Cranston High School. She devoted herself to her faith, family and her home. Mrs. Beck survived breast cancer 21 years ago. At that time she was given 3 to 5 years to live. She was an active advocate for womens cancer support issues. She was also an active Evangelical Christian involved with the Union Church of Prudence Island, where her faith gave her strength. She had a career as a medical transcriptionist and office manager. She volunteered with her husband in the formation and growth of the Prudence Conservancy, and the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Through her life she touched many people. Mrs. Beck was a gourmet cook and an expert gardener, she also enjoyed quilting and nature printing and other crafts. She is survived by her husband Allan Beck of Prudence Island, RI, a son Eric Beck of Bristol, RI, two daughters Lindsay Sweeney of Tunbridge, VT, and Allyson Beck of South Woodstock, VT, her sister Barbara Banahan of Chapel Hill, NC, and a sister-in-law Cynthia Banahan of East Providence, RI, four granddaughters Madison and Sydney Beck of Bristol, RI, Hayley Wren Sweeney of Tunbridge, VT, and Meredith Strafach of Westerly, RI. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14, 2002 at 11:00 AM in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be private.
