Margaret Ellen Hickman Carter, 86, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on August 9, 2024. She was the wife of the late Chaplain (LTC) James A. Carter, U.S. Army, Ret., for 60 years.
Born in Eldon, MO, she was the daughter of the late John and Betty (Hoskins) Hickman.
Beginning her educational career in a one-room schoolhouse, Margaret went on to graduate from Moberly High, School, Central Methodist College, and earned her Master's Degree in Education from Central Washington State University. A math teacher for 40 years, she retired from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, the nation's first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
She was an extraordinary educator, wife, mother, sister, and friend. A life-long reader, she continued to read one or two books a week. Having lived in eight states-and visited 46-she loved travel, visiting family, sewing, cooking, and was a champion Rook player. Later in life she became a Kansas Basketball and Chiefs football fan.
Margaret is survived by her children; Brad Carter, of Newport, RI, Cindi Carter, of Blue Springs, MO, her siblings; Donald (Carlene) Hickman, of Grapeland, TX, Robert (Pam) Hickman, of Kansas City, MO, and her sister-in-law; Alice Hickman, Belmont, MO.
In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her brother, Stan Hickman, and her sisters, Alice Richardson and Marian Mayes.
Private services for Margaret will be held in the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Kansas.
