Margaret ?Peg? McCabe nee Clarkin, 82, of 21 Bowery Street, Newport, died at her home Friday, December 22, 2006. Born in New York City on May 30, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James and Nora Rowan Clarkin.She was the beloved mother of Christopher McCabe of Orange, CT, Monica McCabe of Royal Oak, MI, Maura McCabe of Peekskill, NY, and Maggie McMonagle and her husband Robert of Surfside, FL, the adoring grandmother of Ian McCabe Porteus of Peekskill, NY, the cherished sister of James Clarkin of San Diego, CA, the sister-in-law of James Carolan of San Francisco, CA, and Aunt of many loving and beloved nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Eileen Carolan and Marie Lee and sister-in-law of the late Thomas Lee.After graduating from the prestigious Cathedral High School in Manhattan, Peg worked to promote social justice with her involvement in union organizing for The Newspaper Guild and with The Catholic Worker Movement founded by Dorothy Day. While working at Time, Inc., she met John C. McCabe, also of New York, whom she married. She raised her four children in the New York City suburbs. Peg retained a life-long commitment throughout to such causes as ending war, racism and defeating social injustice.Divorced in the early 1970?s, Peg came to Newport and purchased the Peleg Barker House at 11 Clarke Street. Soon thereafter she also purchased a Victorian rooming house at 16 Clarke Street and transformed this building into the bed breakfast known as The Queen Anne Inn. A reveiw in one popular guide book a the time described the innkeeper as the affable Peg McCabe, and this was quite true. She operated the inn until her retirement in 1993.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 10 am in St. Joseph Church, 5 Mann Avenue at Broadway, Newport.The family is inviting friends to celebrate Peg?s life with them at Sardella?s Restaurant, 30 Memorial Blvd., 4 ? 7 pm this Thursday, December 28, 2006.Memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
