Margaret Reed O'Brien Scott of Sedona, Arizona, died on February 17, 2014, in Kailua, Hawaii, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of CDR Richard F. Scott, USN, retired.Born in Newport on April 6, 1948, she was the daughter of Donal F. O'Brien, DVM, and Katharine Sutherland O'Brien. She attended Middletown High School, where she was valedictorian of her class, and graduated cum laude from Connecticut College in 1970. She married her husband in Newport on June 6, 1970. She later graduated magna cum laude from University of San Diego Law School in 1986, after which she practiced law with Sherman Howard in Denver, Colorado, and at her own practice in Estes Park, Colorado, for several years. She was a member of the California State Bar and the Colorado Bar Association. While living in Estes Park, she enjoyed hiking and horseback riding. In 1998, she and her husband moved to Hawaii and lived in Kona, Hilo, and Honolulu for a total of 16 years. While living in Honolulu, she was a substitute teacher at many local private schools.She was predeceased by her father in 1989 and her mother on February 15, 2014. In addition to her husband of 43 years, she is survived by her sons, Dr. Christopher D. Scott of San Francisco, California, and Matthew C. Scott of Kona, Hawaii; her aunts, Barbara Kittell of Pomona, California, and Janet Campbell of Wytheville, Virginia; and many cousins. She is also survived by her beloved yellow Labrador Retriever, Nova.A joint memorial service for Margaret and her mother will be held at United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, on Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.The family requests that memorial gifts be designated for bladder cancer research at Mayo Clinic Arizona in memory of Margaret O'Brien Scott: Mayo Clinic Development Department, 13400 East Shea Boulevard, Scottsdale, AZ 85259.
