Marguerite L. Hinkel

Marguerite L. Spencer Johnson Hinkel, 92, formerly of Algonquin Drive, Middletown, RI, died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Village House Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Newport. She was the wife of the late CDR Harold Hinkel, USN Ret. and also the late William Johnson. Born in Exeter, NH on January 1, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Lena Grenier Spencer.Marguerite grew up in New Hampshire and moved to Rhode Island with her young family. She worked at the Newport Navy Base for several years. She moved on to Norfolk, VA and worked for the US Army for over 10 years as a writer. She later moved to Vernon, CT and after retirement, moved back to RI. Marguerite enjoyed bowling and was active in local bowling leagues until she was well into her 80s.She is survived by her sons, Steven Johnson of Middletown, RI, William Johnson of South Windsor, CT, and Charles Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Sylvia Barlow of Newport, RI; a step-son, Eric Hinkel of Pennsylvania; and a brother, Ralph Spencer of Belmont, NH. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Claudia Hinkel and grandson Steven Barlow. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial with committal prayers will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 11 am in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT.Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 8:30 to10 am prior to the funeral service.In lieu of lowers, memorial donations may be made to Village House, Activities Fund, 70 Harrison Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
