Newport, - Maria P. Mendes DeFreitas, 73, of 90 Girard Avenue Newport, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Charlton Memorial Hospital Fall River, MA.She was the wife of the late Jaime DeFreitas to whom she was married to for 51 years at the time of his death. Born in Madeira, Portugal, on October 30, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John and Delmina Gomes Mendes.Mrs. DeFreitas was a housekeeper at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was a member of Jesus Saviour Church. Mrs. DeFreitas enjoyed knitting for her childrend and grandchildren as well as spending time with them all. She is survived by five sons Jaime DeFreitas, Juvenal DeFreitas and Jose DeFreitas all of Middletown, RI, Ernesto DeFreitas of Bristol, RI and John DeFreitas of Portsmouth, RI, four daughters Ermenia Francisco and Manuela Garcia both of Middletown, RI and Alda Maria Albernase and Bernadette DeFreitas both of Portsmouth, RI, two sisters Mariazinha Clement of Maderia, Portugal and Eizara Bent of Sao Paulo, Brazil and eleven grandchildren.She was the mother of the late Maria P. DeFreitas. Her funeral will be held on Monday, May 12, 2003, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport.
