Martha Haynes

Martha (Marty) Ann Haynes, 84, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, died at home on December 22, 2024. She was the wife of Christopher Haynes for 44 years.

Born in Springfield, MA on December 21, 1940, She was the daughter of the late Frank and Grace (Shea) Gleason. Formerly of Marshfield and Milton, MA. Although she lived in different parts of the country at various times, she was always a New Englander at heart. Martha had lived in Portsmouth since 1992.

Martha was a graduate of Cathedral High School of Springfield, MA, and St. Francis School of Nursing of Hartford, CT. She was a registered nurse for 50 years. Switching careers after the untimely death of her first husband, Jerry Stauder, she became a drafts person for Stone & Webster. After a time she met Christopher and they married in 1980.

A lover of all animals, especially dogs, horses and birds. She is noted for her skill in the practical arts, especially decorating and needlepoint. Always open to new experiences, she hosted exchange students while her children were in high school. She later continued that tradition with aspiring baseball players during the summers for many years. She loved hosting young people and developed several long - term relationships, one of which continued for the rest of her life.

Gregarious and friendly, if Marty saw a person walking a dog down the street, she would stop and engage them in conversation. Before you knew it, she had learned their life story.

Martha is survived by her husband Christopher Haynes, her children; Timothy (Juliann) Stauder, Ann (Justin) Salem, Amy (Tracy) Dahl, and Robert Stauder and her grandchildren; Caitlin (Chris McVety) Stauder, Ian (Lily) Stauder, Claire Stauder, Colleen Stauder, Ursula (Prab) Randhawa, and Thaddeus Stauder; and her great-grandchildren Cora, Charlotte, and Marianne.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, and by her first husband and father of her children, Jerry Stauder.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, from 5:00-8:00pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 30 at 2:00 pm in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be in Marshfield, MA at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Martha's memory to St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
