Martha M. Babbitt

Martha M. Babbitt, 89, of Lake Road, Tiverton, formerly of Cliff Avenue, Newport, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, ME.She was the wife of the late Harold W. Babbitt with whom she was married for 58 years.Born in Newport, RI on April 17, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Axel and Anna F. Egan Helgesen.Mrs. Babbitt attended Newport schools and graduated from Rogers High School. She attended Newport Hospital School of Nursing and in her early years worked in Dr. Colitzs office, as well as, being a homemaker and loving Mother and Grandmother. She loved animals, especially her pet cats, enjoyed sewing and was a longtime member of Trinity Church in Newport.She is survived by her daughter, Lorna Governo and her husband Stephen of Tiverton, RI and Troy, ME; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Babbitt Rae of Vancouver, WA; four grandchildren, Curtis Babbitt, Crystal Totten, Casey Governo and Luke Governo; and six great-grandchildren, Denver Babbitt, Alexia Totten, Madison Totten, Samuel Governo, Harrison Governo and Kyle Governo.She was the mother of the late Lance Babbitt and sister of the late Jack John Helgesen and Frances Richardson.Funeral services were private.Burial was in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
