Portsmouth, RI - Mary McKenna Carawan, 90, of Wapping Road, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Hoyt Street, Warwick, RI, died Saturday, June 11, 2011 at her home in Portsmouth, RI. She was the wife of the late Robert Evans Carawan of Swan Quarter, NC.Born in Providence, RI on December 22, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William Joseph and Helen OConnor McKenna.Mary worked for twenty years for the former Narragansett Electric Company as a legal secretary and previously for Dr. William E. McKenney in Warwick, RI and at Uncle Harrys Toy Shoppe in Providence, RI. She was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church, and a former member of the St. Rose of Lima Church in Warwick, where she was active with their Rosary and Altar Guild. Mary was baptized in Blessed Sacrament Parish in Providence. Mary was a talented cook and was devoted to caring for her family.She is survived by her son Robert Carawan, Jr. and his wife Louise Anne Clumecky Carawan of Portsmouth, RI, and her grandson Benjamin Marcus Carawan of Portsmouth, RI, a brother Raymond McKenna of East Greenwich, RI, and nephews Raymond McKenna of Connecticut, Thomas McKenna of Phoenixville, PA, and niece Barbara McKenna of North Kingstown, RI.She was preceded in death by her brother William B. McKenna, nephew William B. McKenna and niece Janice Morressette.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 15, at 10:30 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be at St. Anns Cemetery in Cranston.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 14 from 4:00-7:30 pm in the Connors Funeral Home.Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Society at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
