Mary Alvanas

Middletown, RI - Mary Raposa Alvanas, 96, formerly of 82 Jepson Lane, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.She was the wife of the late Manuel Alvanas, Jr. Born in the Portsmouth, RI, on July 17, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Cabral Raposa.Mrs. Alvanas was a member of St. Barnabas Church and very active in their events. In her youth she helped her family with their farm. She was a kind wife and mother and a wonderful cook. She also worked as a housekeeper for many Newport residents. She is survived by her son Steve Alvanas of Knoxville, TN, her brother Frank Raposa of Portsmouth, RI, twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.She was the mother of the late Frank Alvanas, Manuel Alvanas, and Josephine Tiffault. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 11:00am, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 21, 2009, from 6-9pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
