Newport, RI - Mary Ann Coute Hanks, 75, of 29 Newport Avenue, Newport, died Sunday, December 12, 2004 at home. She was the wife of the late Curtis Lee Hanks, and former wife of Edward S. Mattos, Sr. Born in Portsmouth, RI on August 2, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Duarte and Hortence Combra Coute. Mrs. Hanks was a former CCD Teacher and former member of the church choir at St. Josephs Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #7 Aquidneck Chapter, and the Emblem Club of the Newport Elks Lodge. She is survived by her son Edward S. Mattos, Jr. of Rockville, MD, two daughters Fran Marie Connors of Dorchester, MA, and Valerie Anne Cayce of Newport, RI and four grandchildren, Meghan, Colin, and Erin Mattos, and Matthew Connors.She was the sister of the late John, Manuel, Antone, Joseph and Bento Coute. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2004, at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Service of Newport and Bristol Counties - Hospice, 1184 East Main Road Portsmouth, RI 02871.
