Mary Arruda

Mary (Roberts) Arruda, 90, of Middletown, RI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Forest Farm Health Care Center.She was the daughter of Martin A. Roberts and Catherine T. Shea.She was born in Newport, RI on September 16, 1925.She was a lifelong Newport resident, except for a few years in her youth when her Dad was stationed as a submariner in Seattle, WA. Mary graduated from Rogers High School in 1944. Her employment history included working at the Newport Torpedo Station during World War II, the United States Department of Agriculture, the Industrial National Bank, and she worked for 23 years at the Tax Assessor's Office for the City of Newport until she retired in 1987.She is survived by Patricia A. Paquette and her husband Gregory E. Paquette of Middletown, RI and her grandchildren, Brian Patrick Paquette and his partner Daniel Coslett of Seattle, WA, Michelle Mee Joo Paquette of Newport, RI, and Sean Eun Shik Paquette of Cambridge, MA, sisters-in-law Anita Roberts, Helen Lawrence, and Dorothy Carpenter, all of Middletown, RI, several nieces and nephews, and her "second daughter" Susan Batista of Newport, RI. She was the sister of the late Martin "Buddy" Roberts, and the close cousin of the late Anna H. Shea.Mary was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Parish in Newport, RI and more recently a member of St. Mary's Parish of Newport, RI. Mary enjoyed traveling, especially to the birthplace of her mother in Sneem, County Kerry, Ireland. She also enjoyed genealogy, playing cards, world affairs, politics, and being with friends and family. She especially loved being with her grandchildren, who had the good fortune of living with Nana in their home for nearly twenty years.Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2016, from 4-6pm, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI.Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Farm Health Care Center Activities Fund, 193 Forest Avenue, Middletown, RI 02842.
