Mary B. Spooner

Portsmouth, RI - Mary B. Spooner, 97, of 228 Turnpike Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Newport Hospital.She was the wife of the late Thomas Francis Spooner. Born in Portsmouth, RI on August 8, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Augustus T. and Rita Decosta Brown.Mrs. Spooner owned and operated the former Barbaras Lingerie Shop in Aquidneck Plaza then went to work with her husband at Spooners Green Houses, retiring in 1989 after 18 years. She was a communicant of St. Anthonys Church, a member of the Quota Club and the Womens Catholic Club of St. Anthonys and also attended St. Barnabas Church. She is survived by her step sons William H. Spooner of Deland, FL and Edward J. Spooner of Newport, RI, her brothers Anthony A. Brown of Portsmouth, RI and Jesse Brown of Fairhaven, MA, her sister Cecelia A. Brown of Portsmouth, RI, nine step grandchildren and thirteen step great grandchildren and also her loving adopted family the Pembers, of Portsmouth.She was the step mother of the late Thomas Francis Spooner, Jr. and the sister of the late Louis Brown, Olympia M. Botelho and Kathleen Brown. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at 9:00 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Burial will follow in Island Cemetery, Newport.Donations in her memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to Portsmouth Public Library, 2658 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871
