Newport, RI - Mary C Sardinha Baker, 97, of 3 Butler Street, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at St. Clare Home, where she lived for the last 6.5 years. She was a Newport resident for 75 years.She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Sardinha and the late James F. Baker. Born in Fall River, MA a daughter of the late Manual M. and Jacintha Castanho.Mrs. Baker had worked as a licensed practical nurse for over 40 years, retiring in 1976. She had worked for the Hunt and Whetmore families as well as other families. She was the school nurse at the former Miramar School on Bellevue Ave. Mary was also a Communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. She is survived by her son Joseph R Sardinha of Portsmouth, RI, and she was the devoted Gram to nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.She was the mother of the late Mary Gertrude Sardinha Heald, Patricia E Lopes, and the sister of the late William Castanho, Daniel Castanho and George Castanho and Adeline Medeiros. Mary was the grandmother of the late Timothy R. Sardinha and great great grandmother to the late Evan and Brady Dugan.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Clare Nursing Home, 309 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
