Mary C. Souza

Mary C. Souza, 80, of Middletown, RI died on Monday, January 26, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital of Providence. She was the wife of the late Edward L. Souza. Born on July 23, 1934, in Middletown to the late Manuel and Mary E. (Furtado) Silvia.Mary graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in Newport. She spent 30 years as a telephone operator and later spent another 17 years as a tour guide for Viking Tours. Her love of Aquidneck Island was evident in her enthusiasm during tours, and often gave friends and family private tours. Mrs. Souza lived with her family at Fairholme estate on Ruggles Avenue for 38 years with her husband and children. Mary enjoyed making friends, making people laugh, and was quick with a tease or a joke among friends.She was the mother of Edward L. Souza of Archer, FL, the late Robert M. Souza, William A. Souza of Lantana, FL, Mary Catherine Harper and her husband Donald, and Rosemarie Souza and her husband Christopher Bert all of Portsmouth. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Edward Souza and Lilia Souza of Lantana, FL, Melissa Souza of Crofton, MD, Alexis R. Souza of Denver, CO, Alicia Souza and Carla Souza of Cocoa, FL, Kathryn A. Harper, Benjamin E. Harper and Colten M. Bert all of Portsmouth, RI, her great grandson Travis Lee Taylor of Cocoa, FL, her sister Delphine Driscoll of Coventry, RI, and brother-in-laws William Souza of Newport and Raymond Silvia of Middletown. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Raymond Souza, sister-in-laws Dorothy Silvia, Barbara Silvia and Caroline Almeida all of Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015, from 4:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 8:00am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway, Newport, RI. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard, Portsmouth.
