Mary (Korahakis) Champion, 91, of Middletown died Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Sydney Champion.Born in Fall River, MA, on November 1923, she was the daughter of the late Apostolas and Pelayia (Kacau) Korahakis. Mary moved to New Hampshire with her parents and graduated from Central High School in Manchester, NH. She was a photographer and began her career at Beverly Studios in Manchester, until she met and married Sydney Champion after WWII. She moved to Middletown, RI and resided in Rhode Island for the balance of her life. She continued working as a photographer at Cherry and Webb in Fall River, Massachusetts until she retired. She was a communicant of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, a member of the Choir and a life-member of the Daughters of Penelope for 65 years. She was also a member of the Newport Hospital Auxillary. Mary also was an avid card player enjoying black jack, poker and pinochle and was also a scrabble enthusiast. She was a member of the Middletown Garden Club and enjoyed gardening.She is survived by her brother-in law, Paul Pappas of Manchester, NH, and her nieces and nephews, James Pappas of Manchester, NH, Ernest Pappas of Apopka, FL, Paula P. Borbotsina of Manchester, NH, and Pamela Yannakopoulos of Dracut, MA, six grand nieces, four grand nephews and her goddaughter, Andrea Theodosopoulos of Manchester, New Hampshire.Special thanks to her neighbor, Tim Thompson, Linda King and Keisha Browner, her devoted care givers who assisted her during the last two years of her life. Our thanks also to her many close friends who were beloved to her.She was the sister of the late Stephen Korahakis and Jennie Pappas.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 from 3-6 in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 4 at 11:00 am, in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, Thames Street, Newport, RI.
