Newport, RI - Mary Evelyn Wells Cahill, 90, of 31 B DeBlois Street, Newport, RI, passed away at home with her family and friends by her side on Sunday, January 8, 2012.A devoted mother, nana, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, she was also the wife of the late Joseph J. Cahill. Born in Boston, MA on September 15, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Michael E. and Helen Sylva Wells.In 1974 with the closing of Chelsea Naval Hospital, she transferred to the Newport Naval Hospital where she was assigned to the maternity ward. She loved Newport and retired here, becoming a foster grandmother with Child and Family services. She was dedicated to her community and friends. She loved books, the Red Sox, flowers, and Tuesday nights at First Beach. She was a wise woman, who believed in the joy of life, family and friends.She is survived by her children, Patricia Cahill of Hopkinton, RI, Margaret Hunter and her husband Jack of Coos Bay, OR, William Cahill and his wife Molly of Everett, MA, and Eleanor Boober of Newport, RI, her siblings, William Wells of Florida, Leo Wells of Foxboro, MA, Joan Phillips of Foxboro, MA and Claire Sloane of Needham, MA, her grandchildren, Judy Derby, Joseph Cahill, Jo-Anna Johnson, Edward Gilletly, Daniel Gilletly, Brian Gilletly, Joslyne Park, David Hunter, Paul Hunter, Rebecca Harting, Jessica Cahill, Thomas Cahill and Peter Cahill.She was the mother of the late Patricia A. Cahill, Joseph J. Cahill, Edward Cahill and Maggie her beloved Boston Terrier, and the sister of the late Charles Wells, Dorothy Ryan, Anna Norton, Florence McKenna, Walter Wells, Edward Wells, Thomas Wells, James Wells, and Margaret Gobbie.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2012, from 4:00-8:00pm in the Hambly Funeral Home, Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012, at 10:00am in St. Augustins Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow at 1pm in St. Josephs Cemetery, 990 Lagrange Street, West Roxbury, MA.Donations in her memory may be made to Child and Family Services of Newport, 31 John Clarke Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
