Mary Elizabeth (Escobar) Lopes

Newport, RI - Mary Elizabeth (Escobar) Lopes, 86, of Newport, a retired bookkeeper died Friday, January 17, 2014, at home with her husband and son by her side.She was the wife of Edmund Joseph Lopes. They were married April 7, 1947, in Jesus Saviour Church.She was the daughter of the late Francisco Silveira Escobar and Rosa daRosa (Tirana) Escobar.She was born March 14, 1927, in Newport at home.Mary attended Coggeshall and Mumford schools and graduated from Rogers High School class of 1945. She worked as a bookkeeper for Joseph J. Chaves Heating and Plumbing Co., Newport National Bank, RI Auxiliary navy Relief Society and Joseph D. Mello and Son Plumbing, retiring in 1991.Mary and Ed did a lot of volunteer work for Jesus Saviour Church and the James L. Maher Center. She was a lifelong member of Jesus Saviour Church and was baptized in the Holy Ghost Hall on Fenner Avenue the church was using while the church was being built. She is also a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality since October of 1959.Besides her husband of 66 years, she leaves one son, Edmund J. Lopes Jr. of Newport, RI and five nieces and nephews.She was the sister of the late Francisco S. Escobar, Jr.Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 20, 2013, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 8:00 AM, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 9am, in Jesus Savior Church, 1 Vernon Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Donations in her memory may be made to the James L.
