Middletown, - Mary Elizabeth Hawthorne, 86, of 125 Quaker Lane, Portsmouth, formerly of 17 Anne Hutchinston Court, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. Born in New London, CT on November 9, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Frederick A Hawthorne and Bridget E Sullivan Hawthorne.Dr. Hawthorne attended St. Marys Academy of the Visitation in Providence, RI, the University of Rhode Island where she received her Bachelor of Science in 1937, the Pennsylvania State University where she received her Master?s of Science in 1940, the University of Minnesota where she took graduate courses in Biological Sciences and Michigan State University where she became Doctor of Philosophy in 1950. From 1946 to 1964 she taught in Biological Sciences at the college level, progressed through the Academic Ranks from Instructor to Professor of Biology, served on the faculties of the Pennsylvania State University, The University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, The University of Rhode Island and Boston University. From 1971 to 1973 Dr. Hawthorne was Educational Advisor to the Commander at the School of Health Care Sciences, at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. From 1973 to 1974 Dr. Hawthorne was Assistant Director of the Nationwide Study of Allied Health Education, a one year project conducted at the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges under a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant. From 1975 to 1977 she was the Director of the Physicians Assistant Program, at Western Michigan University, in Kalamazoo MI. From 1977 to 1984 Dr. Hawthorne was the Assistant Director, of the Affiliated Education Programs Service, at the Office of Academic Affairs, Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hawthorne was in the U.S. Navy WAVES, from 1944 to 1946 she attended Officer Candidate School, where she graducated and Commissioned Ensign in the Hospital Corps., she was an Avation Physiologist, at the Naval Air Station, in Pensacola, FL, Assistant Director, in the Rehabilitation Training School, at the Naval Training Station, in the Bronx, NY and a Rehabilitation Officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, NY. From 1946 to 1964 U.S. Navy Research Reserve Inactive Duty, From 1964-1971 Dr. Hawthorne returned to Active Duty in the U.S. Navy and was Head of the Academic Department, in the U.S. Naval Medical School, in Bethesda, MD, in 1971 she retired at the rank of Commander, Medical Service Corps, U.S. Navy.Awards and Honors: Professional Academic: Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Scholastic The Society of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Society. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 9:00AM, from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM, in St. Anthony?s Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery in New London, CT.
