Mary Ella Rogers

Mary Ella Rogers, 84, formerly of Warner Street, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the John Clarke Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Louis Clay Rogers.Born on February, 1928 in Dunbar, VA, she was the daughter of the late M. E. and Nancy Jones. Mrs. Rogers worked for General Electric for 15 years as an assembler and then at Newport Hospital as a dietician for 6 years retiring in 1986. She was a member of Queen Esther Chapter No. 2 Order of Eastern Star, Community Baptist Church Missionary Ministry, the Marion J Brown Visitation Ministry, the Laurence Dunbar Dramatic Club Ministry, She also taught vocational Bible school, she served on the Usher Board Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, l. She was a member of Church Woman United, a member and volunteer of the Edward King Senior Citizens Club and a Life member of NAACP.She is survived by her children, Louis C. Rogers, Jr. and his wife Nelly of El Paso, TX, Calvin C. Rogers and his wife Monica of Newport, RI, Gwendolyn Lee Bassett and her husband Robert of Portsmouth, RI, and Yvonne J. Coleman and her husband Orlanda of Newport, RI, her brother, Jimmy Lee Jones of Big Stone Gap, VA, her sisters, Virginia Lee Pinkard of Brandon Fl, Flora Mae Patterson and Mattie Mae Hamler of Big Stone Gap, VA, Willa Mae Grimes of Detroit, MI and Elizabeth Ann Collins of Wise VA, twenty-one grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren.She was predeceased by her daughters, Marcie Ann Graves and Gloria Mitchell Moss, her son, Timothy Lamar Rogers and her granddaughter, Crystal Mitchell Jefferson. Calling hours will be held on, Monday October 15, 2012 beginning at 10 am in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd., Newport, RI, with the funeral service to follow at 12 noon in the church.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research, 222 Richmond Street, Suite 200, Providence, RI 02903-4253.
