Mary J. Hopkins, 91, of Newport, died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at home.Born July 28, 1923 in Shamokin, PA, she was the daughter of the late Noble and Margie (Lauer) Henninger. She was the wife of the late John D. Hopkins, LT Newport Police.Mary graduated from Coal Township High School in Shamokin, PA in 1941. She attended business school in Philadelphia, PA and worked in Washington, D.C. in the War Department from 1942-1944. Mary entered nurses training in 1945 in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp. and graduated from West Baltimore General Hospital in 1948 as a registered nurse. She worked at Baltimore City Hospitals, Newport Hospital as a staff nurse and as a private duty nurse. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW-4487. Mary loved her family and animals, especially her cats and will be missed and cherished by her family.She is survived by two daughters Margie H. Dunbar and her husband Norman of Middletown, and Joan Hopkins of Newport; two granddaughters Christine Dunbar of Portsmouth, and Jennifer Viveiros and her husband Philip of Fall River, MA; two great grandchildren, Jack Viveiros and Elizabeth Viveiros both of Fall River, MAMary was the sister of the late Paul Henninger and Thea Young.Keeping with Mary's wishes, all services will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robert Potter League For Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
