Mary Louise Stanton Carrellas, 78, of 24 Dudley Avenue, Newport, RI, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, February 25, 2008 at home. She was the wife of Dr. Anthony Carrellas. Born in Johnstown, PA on March 28, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Vincent A. and Grace Miller Stanton. Mrs. Carrellas received her BS in nursing in 1952 from Duquesne University a five year program which led to her long standing career in nursing. She started her career at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY, which was a polio hospital, then the District of Columbia General Hospital, where she met her husband Dr. Carrellas. They moved to Newport where she continued working as a nurse at St. Annes Hospital in Fall River and finally at the Village House Nursing Home, retiring in 1986. Mrs. Carrellas also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program for over 20 years. Mary Lou was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church since 1955 and a member of the Rosary Sodality. Mrs. Carrellas was a member of the Redwood Library, Newport Preservation Society, Newport Art Museum, the Circle of Scholars of Salve Regina University, the Vasco da Gama and the Newport Hospital Auxiliary. Mary Lou enjoyed going to the Newport Athletic Club with her friends, reading and traveling with her husband. Mary Lou was an avid flower gardener and also enjoyed their vacation home in New Hampshire and being with her family and grandchildren. Besides her husband of 52 years, she is survived by her children, Dr. Robert A. Carrellas and his wife Mimi of Middletown, RI, David Carrellas of Newport, RI, Ann Carrellas of Ann Arbor, MI, Dr. Joan Carrellas, MD and her husband Vincent Chmielarczyk of Santa Fe, NM, and Patricia G. Carrellas and her husband Stephan Boneu of Portsmouth, RI, her brother Vincent A. Stanton of Vero Beach, FL, her sister Faye Ann Blum of Fort Mill, SC, and her grandchildren, Ami Fall of Ann Arbor, MI, Zoe Chmielarczyk, Maggie Chmielarczyk and Gillian Chmielarczyk all of Santa Fe, NM, Nicholas Carrellas, Madeline Carrellas, Julia Carrellas and Peter Carrellas all of Middletown, RI, Grace Boneu, Henri Boneu and Margaux Boneu all of Portsmouth, RI. Her funeral will be held on Friday, February 29, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held Thursday, February 28 from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
