Mary Madeline Nunes

Mary Madeline (Medeiros) Nunes, 93, of Middletown, RI died Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Frank (Larry) Nunes.Born in Middletown, RI on June 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Mary (Escobar) Medeiros. Mary was a graduate of Rogers High School, Newport Business Secretarial School, and Milgrim Business School. In the 1930's Mary enjoyed working at the snack stand at Peabody's Beach in Middletown. She served as a secretary from 1940 to 1946 at the Newport Naval Base Newport RI. Mary worked as a secretary and mortgage processor for her husband's business for the next 54 years. Mary served the town of Middletown as a councilwoman for 20 years She also served as a member of the town's Dept. of Transportation, Education Review Board, and the Second Beach Committee. Mary was a member of the Friends of the Library, Middletown Historical Society, Middletown Senior Center, Vasca da Gama Holy Ghost Society, Rose Island Lighthouse Assoc. Newport Hospital Ethics Committee, and the Board of Governors, Newport Hospital. She was the proud mother to Susan Nunes of New London, CT, Diane Kerins and her husband Brian of Amelia Island, FL, Theresa Kali and her husband Chris of Middletown, RI, and Mary Ellen Helger and her husband Norman of Portsmouth, RI. She was preceded in death by her son Francis L. Nunes. She was the joy of her grandchildren Kim Kerins Traylor of Norcross, GA, Kevin Kerins of Atlanta, GA, Kate Kerins George and her husband Chris of Vienna, VA, Krystal Leslie and her husband Eldon of Summershade, KY, Norman Helger, Jr. of Tiverton, RI and Candice Kalil and Jacob Kalil of Middletown, RI. Mary also loved visits from her great grandchildren Madeline Traylor, Harrison Traylor and Jackson Traylor, John Paul and David George and Mary Klaire and Paden Leslie.Mary is survived by her brother Martin Medeiros and his wife Mary of Middletown, RI. She is preceded in death by her brothers Anthony Medeiros, Joseph Medeiros and Arthur Medeiros.Her funeral will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015, at 9am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.Donations in her memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
