Mary Margaret Carrellas

Middletown, - Mary Margaret Carrellas, 76, formerly of 1 Bliss Mine Road, Middletown, died Friday, November 8, 2002 after a courageous 13 year battle with Parkinson?s Disease at the Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, where she was treated like family everyday of her life there. Born in Newport, RI on December 19, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Manuel F. and Mary Barboza Carrellas.Miss Carrellas was a 1943 graduate of Rogers High School and was awarded her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Emmanuel College from then Archbishop Cushing of Boston in 1947. She had a distinguished teaching career at both the Carey and Coggeshall Schools of Newport, where she taught in the elementary grades and was especially proud of her work with the special education children until her retirement in 1976.Miss Carrellas was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church, and a member of the Newport Teachers Association, the Rhode Island Teachers Association, as well as the National Education Association of Rhode Island. She was an avid flower gardener and amatuer ornithololgist. She is survived by two brothers, Ernest J. Carrellas of Middletown, RI, and Dr. Anthony T. Carrellas of Newport, RI, eleven nephews and seven nieces.She was the sister of the late Judge Arthur A. Carrellas, Joseph G. Carrellas, Alfred Carrellas, Dr. George J. Carrellas, Evelyn M. Almeida and of Sr. Irene T. Carrellas. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842..
