Newport, RI - Mary Elizabeth (Gibson) Destremps, of Greene Lane, Middletown, passed to her well-deserved reward on April 18, 2013.Mary fought a long and arduous battle with mental illness all of her adult life. Before the onset of this terrible disease, Mary was an active and lively person, an accomplished artist, a straight A student, a cheerleader, a wonderful and helpful daughter, a generous and thoughtful sister and a loving aunt. Mary was a graduate of St. Catherine's Academy, a National Honor Society laureate, a novice of the Sisters of Our Lady of Providence and attended Salve Regina University. In her latter years Mary enjoyed cooking and was especially fond of gifting her numerous nieces and nephews at Christmas and birthdays.She is survived and missed by her sister, Barbara E. Ripa and her husband Jack, her brothers Harold T. Gibson, Jr., Peter D. Gibson and his wife Suzanne, Shaun A. Gibson and his wife Donna, eleven nieces and nephews and many grands.She was predeceased by her parents, Harold T. and Barbara F. Gibson, her brother Michael and her husband Gerard Destremps.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 5-7pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 9:30am, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.Donations in her memory may be made to Newport County Mental Health, 127 Johnny Cake Hill, Middletown, RI 02842.
