Newport, RI - Capt. Mary T. Lynch, US Navy, Medical Corp. Ret., of Coggeshall Avenue, Newport, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at Blenheim Newport, Middletown, RI at the age of 82. Born in Cambridge, MA on August 30, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles L. Lynch, Sr. and Theresa Buckley Lynch and sister of the late Dr. Charles L. Lynch, Jr., all of Norwood, MA.Dr. Mary Lynch was the first woman Navy Doctor in Newport, RI and Portsmouth, VA Naval Hospitals. Dr. Mary Lynch received her high school diploma in 1943 from Norwood High School, her B. A. Degree in 1946 from Mount Holyoke College and her Medical Degree in 1950 from Tufts University. Dr. Mary Lynch did her internships at Baltimore City Hospitals from 1950 to 1951 and at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland from 1951 to 1952. Her fellowship in Clinical Immunology Fellow was done at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston, MA from 1952 to 1954. In 1954 she enlisted in the United States Navy as Lieutenant Commander. From 1954 to 1956 she was Ward Medical Officer in charge of the Allergy Clinic at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. In 1956, she became Ward medical Officer of the Contagion Unit at the Naval Hospital in Newport, RI, until 1962. From 1962 to 1964 in Washington, DC, she was head of active duty and disposition branch physical qualifications and medical records division and from 1967 to 1969 she was Head of the Legal Medicine Branch advancing through the grades to rank of Captain in 1968. Dr. Mary Lynch from 1969 to 1975 was Head professional of the publication division, Editor of U.S. Navy Medicine, Bureau Medicine and Surgery and from 1975 to 1978 she was Head of adult medicine clinic for the Naval Regional Medical Center in Newport, RI. Dr. Mary Lynch was a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, she was a member of the Diplomat National Board Medical Examiners, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the National Association of Government Communicators for U.S. Naval Institute, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Writers Association. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jeannine Lynch of Norwood, MA, her nieces and nephews, Michael C. Lynch and his wife Katie of Westford, MA, Peter J. Lynch of Florida, Kathleen M. Lynch of Norwood, MA and Elizabeth A. Taillon and her husband Victor of Bel Air, MD, eleven great nieces and nephews and many friends in Newport and Norwood, MA.The family would like to thank and acknowledge the care given to Dr. Mary by the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, the Visiting Nurse Hospice; All About Home Care; the Grand Islander and Blenheim-Newport.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 9:00 am from the MemorialFuneral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Augustins Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport.
