It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matilda Valles, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister. Matilda peacefully departed this life surrounded by the love of her children, Her sister Hilda Britto, and her God Children Karen Jackson and Hilda Silvio on October 18, 2023, at her residence in Portsmouth, RI, at the age of 85.
Born in the Cape Verde Islands on February 10, 1938, to Joao Leite and Rose (Andrade) Costa. Matilda brought her vibrant spirit and warm heart to the United States in the 1960s. It was here that she would meet her loving husband, Benjamin Valles, and together they built a beautiful life together. Matilda devoted herself to raising their daughter, Tracey and son Valerian with unwavering love and care.
Matilda embraced her role as a homemaker, creating a nurturing and loving environment for her family. She found joy in the simple things in life and was known for her exceptional cooking skills, particularly her mouthwatering cornbread that was cherished by all who had the pleasure of tasting it. Her green thumb allowed her to create stunning gardens, bringing beauty and tranquility to her home. Matilda was a seamstress at Hood Sails in the mid 80's where she made sails.
In addition to her culinary talents and gardening, Matilda was a skilled seamstress and loved to create beautiful garments for herself and her loved ones. With needle and thread in hand, she would bring her creative visions to life, leaving behind cherished pieces that hold memories of her love.
Matilda will forever be remembered for her kind-hearted nature, her compassion, and her willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. She touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Tracey Bowen and her husband Brent and their daughter Brenna Rose Bowen of Portsmouth, her son Valerian Valles of Portsmouth and his daughter Skyler Valles of Florida. Matilda leaves her siblings Maria her late husband Joe Senna, Dominga and her husband Antonio Duarte, Hilda and her late husband Tazinho Britto, Cidalia Lopes and Belamiro (Billy) and his wife Lucille Costa. She also leaves may nieces and nephews. She also had many godchildren. Her late brothers Jose and Manuel Costa.
As we mourn the loss of Matilda Valles, we find solace in the precious memories she leaves behind. Her spirit will forever reside within our hearts, and her legacy will continue to inspire us. May Matilda Valles rest in eternal peace with her husband Benjamin, forever.
Calling hours will be held Monday, October 30, 2023 at St. Barnabas Church at from 9:30am to 10:30am followed with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30am. Burial will be private.
