Maureen Rose Coffey, 66, of Middletown died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. Mrs. Coffey was born March 16, 1946 in Hudson, MA. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and the late Rose Marie Sleeper. She is preceded in death by her husband the late John Nicholson Coffey. Maureen worked for over 25 years at Barry Pontiac Motors of Newport in various positions; prior to that she was one of the first women to work for RIPTA in Middletown. She aspired to be the first female exalted ruler of the Newport Elks lodge and succeeded in this endeavor. In her career and life, Maureen worked tirelessly to overcome obstacles, she was a constant source of inspiration to family and friends. She loved to read and always encouraged her children and grandchildren to read and love books. She always tried to create a warm and safe environment for her friends and family, it was clear that her door was always open. Many people found themselves welcome in the Coffey home when they were in need of a friend.She is survived by her long time companion Conrad Burns of Coventry, RI. She is also survived by her son Matt Grigas of Santa Barbara, CA and her daughters: Tina McCabe and her husband Thom of Portsmouth, Teri Romano and her husband Ron of Cumberland, Katie Williams and her husband Tom of Summit, NJ, Maryah Coffey-Abosso and her husband Del of North Kingston, Maureen Coffey-Lapierre and her husband Jay of Middletown, Gretchen Coffey of Middletown, and 8 grandchildren: Amanda, TJ, Sam, Ally, Jaysn, Kaitlyn, Danielle and Christopher. She is preceded in death by daughter Amy Coffey.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm, Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 11:00 am in Calvary United Methodist Church, Turner and Wyatt Roads, Middletown, RI.
