Newport, RI - Mersina J. Karakla Hiotas, 96, of 156 Kay Street, Newport, RI, died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Demetrios S. Hiotas. Born in Pamfela, Mytelene, Greece, on September 16, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Efstratios and Penelope Karakla. Mrs. Hiotas came to America as a 19 year old bride on March 17, 1930. She settled in Newport in 1931, where Demetrios Jimmy owned and operated the Quality Lunch on Broadway. Mrs. Hiotas belonged to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, the Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope, and the Providence College Mothers in the 1950?s. Mrs. Hiotas worked for the Red Cross during World War II. She was the loving mother and Yia Yia of Stanley J. and his wife Julia Hiotas of Granger, IN, Penelope J. Hiotas of Warwick, RI and Charles J. Hiotas of Ada, MI, her grandchildren, Theresa Lauer, Cecilia Anderson, Carol Culligan, Marlene G. Medeiros, George J. Kanary, Jennifer West and James S. Hiotas, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and her many friends at Heatherwood who she loved and who loved her. Her funeral will be held on Friday, November 10, 2006, at 11:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by funeral services at 12:00 pm in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2006, from 2-6pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.
