Portsmouth, RI - Michael A. Lyga, 80, of Portsmouth, RI, died Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Josephine Almeida Lyga.Born in Lacrosse, WI on July 23, 1931, he was the son of the late George G. and Odile Christenson Lyga.Mr. Lyga served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Naval Station Newport.Mr. Lyga worked at Westcott Construction Corporation as a supervisor for 24 years. He was a life member and past president of the Portsmouth Lions Club, a social member of the Portsmouth Portuguese America Club.He is survived by his wife Jo Lyga of Portsmouth, RI. He leaves his son Michael Lyga Jr. and Carleen Garcia of Portsmouth and his two daughters, Mona Carberry and her husband James of Tiverton, RI and Jeanne Viall and her husband James of Chichester, NH. He also leaves his three sisters Jeanne Boehm of WI., Mary Waters of Texas, and Georgia Lyga of CA.He was the grandfather of Christopher Carberry, Elizabeth Darlington, Eric Carberry, Sarah Hawkins and Daniel Lyga and great-grandfather of seven great grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Monday, September 26, 2011, at 9am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth followed with a with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held Sunday, September 25 from 4-8 in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd. Portsmouth, RI.Memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth Lions Club, PO Box 657, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to the Newport Hospital, 19 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840.
