Michael Angelo Spero

NEWPORT, RI - Michael Angelo Spero, 93, of 12 Dean Avenue, Newport, RI, died Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown, RI. He was the husband of the late Hope Vernon Williams Spero. Born in Newport, RI, on April 15, 1912, he was the son of the late Caesar A. and Marie A. Radice Spero.Michael was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from March 1942 to November 1945. He was a proud member of the 389th Port Battallion Transportation Corps, attached to the Fifth Army?s Infantry Division, and served in Canada, North Africa Oran and Italy Salerno, Naples and Anzio Beachhead. He was a barber on Broadway in Newport for over 50 years, taking over the shop after his father?s death in 1947. Michael was devoted to his family, took great pride in his yard and garden, and enjoyed swimming, walking and visiting with friends at Eastons Beach. He was a communicant of St. Marys Church, and a member of the 389th Port Batallion Association, the Sons of Italy, and the Forum Lodge. He is survived by two daughters, Christina C. Rose and Michele M. Spero of Portsmouth, his brother, Caesar A. Spero, of Portsmouth, RI, two sisters, Theodora ?Teddy? A. Dufur, of Fallon, NV, and Marguerite S. Wander of Bowie, MD, his granddaughter, Stacey M. Rose-Arsenault, of Tiverton, RI, his grandson, Scott R. Rose, of Portsmouth, RI, his great-granddaughter, Hope Olivia Arsenault of Tiverton, RI, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Vernon W. Spero, his brothers, Vito J. Spero and Anthony J. Spero, and his sisters, Marie E. Spero, Helen K. LeCroy, and Philomena ?Dolly? T. Higgins.His funeral will be held on Monday, November 28, 2005, at 8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 am in St. Mary?s Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2005, from 2-5PM in the Memorial Funeral Home.
