Michael E. McCarthy, 27, of 68 Kay Street Newport, died Friday, September 10, 2004 in Walpole, Ma. Born in Newport, RI on November 19, 1976, he was the son of Edward P. McCarthy and Janet Kelly McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy was a 1995 graduate of Middletown High School and was active in football, baseball, and basketball and had been a captain of the basketball team his senior year.He was the recipient of the John Kroll Memorial Award for his dedication, leadership and unselfish play. He then graduated from Stonehill College in 1999 where he received a BA in education. He worked in Boston and San Francisco until September 11, 2001, when he returned to Rhode Island and began working as a substitute teacher in special education for area schools.Mike just began his third year as a special education resource teacher at Tiverton High School. He was also the coach for freshman football and baseball, and served as an assistant coach for varsity and JV. He was previously an assitant basketball coach at Middletown High School. Mike was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, an active mentor and vibrant member of the community. He is survived by his parents Edward P. and Janet Kelly McCarthy of Middletown, RI, a brother Rian A. McCarthy of Middletown, R.I., a sister Kelly M. McCarthy of Newport, RI, and aunt and uncle Thomas and Ann-Marie Nevitt of Middletown, RI and several cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 14, at 10:00 AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Donations will benefit a scholarship at both the Middletown High School and Tiverton High School, they may be sent to the Michael E. McCarthy Scholarship Fund c/o Guidance Department Middletown High School, Valley Road Middletown, RI 02842.
