Mitchell E. Andrews, 89, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 at home.He was the husband of the late Mary Constance (Machado) Andrews.Born on May 13, 1926 in Dale County, AL, he was the son of the late Thomas Martin and Cora (Hegler) Andrews.Mr. Andrews had a Naval Career for 30 years, and was a veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a Federal Protective Officer for 15 years, including as a U.S. Deputy Marshall during the Cuban/Haitian Refugee crisis. He worked at NUWC as a security officer until his retirement. He was well loved and much respected by all who knew him.He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion.He is survived by his children, Janet Mayer-Walker of Newport, RI, Bernadette Riggi of LeRoy, NY, Martin Andrews of Ponce De Leon, FL and Mitchell Andrews II of Middletown, RI, his sisters, Verniese Hall of Panama City, FL and Neva Parrish and her husband Rollie of Dothan, AL, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a great-great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.He was the great grandfather of the late Trent Rushing and the brother of the late Codys, Hoyt, Foy, and Arvell Andrews, Oleta Horne, Melva Mercer, Thelma Judah and Annie Clyde Andrews.Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016, from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, in Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 9:00 from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial will take place in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown, RI.
