Monica K. Magliocco, 83, of Portsmouth, RI passed away peacefully Sunday, January 31, 2016, surrounded by her family. Monica was born on May 18, 1932. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Joseph A. Magliocco, Jr.; and her daughter, Joy P. Magliocco. Monica is the daughter of the late Chester D. Rose M. Knight. She graduated from Cranston High School in 1948, where she grew up. She then graduated in 1953 from URI with a B.S.N. and Salve Regina University with a M.A. Monica was a loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was an avid reader. She loved gardening, music theater. She produced, promoted ran the box office for musicals plays at the Casino Theater in Newport, RI for the Newport Players Guild and Young Peoples Series. Monica dedicated her life to her family and the education of young people. She taught Nursing at the Newport Hospital School of Nursing for over 20 years and continued her nursing career as Professor of Nursing at URI where she retired in 1997. She was a member of the RI State Nurses Association; American Nurses Association; on the Board of Directors for New Visions and Visiting Nurse Services, and responsible for bringing Visiting Nurse Services to Aquidneck Island. She enjoyed the political arena where she served on the Portsmouth School Committee for 10 years, serving 8 years as Chairperson. She was the Chairman of the Republican Town Committee; Republican State Central Committee; RI Foundation Advisory Committee; RI Assoc. School Committee's Legislative Committee. She was an active member of the PHS Band Boosters Club, Girl Scout Leader, League of Women Voters, Portsmouth Garden Club, and a long standing parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth. Monica leaves behind her children,Beth Hammond, and husband, Robert, and their daughter, Jennifer; Jane Magliocco, her husband Wayne Shirk, and son Marcus; Paul Magliocco, and wife Jeannine, and their children Ross, Ainsley Lydia; Paula Margolis, and her husband Shawn.
