Canela "Nel" J. BartisMiddletown - Canela John Bartis, 90, of Middletown, RI passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014. Also known as "Nel", he and his beloved wife Anastasia "Ann" (and their sons) owned and operated the Star Lunch restaurant on Broadway in Newport for over 56 years. Born October 23, 1923 in Newton, MA, he moved to Newport in 1936 with his family to work in the restaurant business leading to the opening of the Star Lunch in 1944. Mr. Bartis was predeceased by his parents, John and Venetia Bartis, his brother James Bartis, and his sister Mary Bartis. "Nel" graduated with the "Class of 1941" from Roger's High School. He assisted in the war effort while working as a machinist at the torpedo station located on Goat Island in Newport, RI. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. An avid baseball fan, Mr. Bartis followed his favorite team, the "Boston Braves" as they moved to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta. He took great joy in watching the ball games and interacting with the players and coaches whether it was at Spring Training or during the regular season. He was always happy to share his many stories and experiences with all those interested. Canela was a parishioner and served on the parish council at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and was a life member of the Order of Ahepa. He was a life member of the Capt. Kenneth Gilbert V.F.W. in Middletown, member of the Newport American Legion, St. Johns #1 Masonic Lodge of Newport, and the Boston Braves Historical Society. Besides his wife, Ann, he leaves three sons, John and his wife Patti of Naples, FL, Peter and his wife Linda of Newport, RI, and Frank and his wife Katherine of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren - Kelli, Greg and his wife Paola, Christian, Kyle, Anastasia, and Nicole; three great-grandchildren - Ava, Evan and Demetrius; one sister, Marlene Tootsie Mihos of Brockton, MA; seven nieces and nephews; and seven god-children. Viewing hours will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 4pm to 8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His service will be held on Thursday June 26, 2014 at 10 in the funeral home, with a Funeral Service at 11:00am in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 309 Thames Street in Newport.Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery Turner and Wyatt Roads in Middletown.
