Francis Anthony OLoughlin, Sr., age 88, of Portsmouth, RI died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Village House Nursing Home of Newport, RI. Francis was born March 28, 1926 in Newport, RI, the son of the late George and Hannah (O'Connor) O'Loughlin. He adored Catherine L. (Smith) O'Loughlin for the 64 years of their marriage, until her death in 2013.After serving his country in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, he held down at least two and sometimes three jobs to provide for his family. He embodied the "I will provide for you" lyrics of one of his favorite songs, "With These Hands" by Richard Tucker. He worked as a cabinet maker at Raytheon for many years. When not working as a caretaker for the church and later the public library, he coached for his sons' baseball teams, having organized and founded the Babe Ruth League in Portsmouth, RI in 1966. Family vacations consisted of lengthy, un-air-conditioned car trips which tested the vehicle occupancy limits and senses of humor of his nine children. He was happiest when surrounded by his loving wife and family.He is survived by nine children and their spouses, Nancy and Bruce Filgate, Very Reverend Francis O'Loughlin, Jr., Thomas and Kirstien O'Loughlin, Edward and Elise O'Loughlin, Michael O'Loughlin, Joseph and Elisabeth O'Loughlin, Kathleen and Kevin Kendrick, Timothy and Jamie O'Loughlin, and George and Lareal O'Loughlin. He was also the grandfather of 22 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchildThe funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport.
