Frank "Larry" Nunes

Newport,RI - Frank "Larry" Nunes, 91, of Middletown, died Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary ( Medeiros) Nunes, He resided at 373 Wyatt Road in Middletown.Born in Newport, RI on July 3, 1921, He was the son of the late Frank Nunes Jr. and Susan (Cardoza) Nunes.Mr. Nunes , a leader of the local business community for over fifty years, owned the Frank Nunes Accounting Firm, the Middletown Insurance Agency and the Larry Nunes Gallery of Homes, all located at 127 West Main Road, Middletown, Rhode Island. Larry was a graduate of Rogers High School and Rhode Island State College (URI ) where he received his BA in Business Administration in 1943. He then joined the U S Army Air Corps serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was discharged honorably from the U.S. Army in 1946. He then returned to Middletown after the war and married his wife on September 14, 1946. For periods of time during his working career he also was an instructor of accounting principles at the University of Rhode Island and at the Newport Business and Secretarial School.Frank "Larry" Nunes served the Town of Middletown and the State in many capacities. Larry was the Town Auditor from 1953-1954; the Town Treasurer from 1955-58 and the Rhode Island Public Utilities Administrator twice, first from 1962-69 and then again from1982-1990.Larry also served the citizens of Middletown as their State Representative from 1970 - 1978. During this period of service to our state he was an influential leader of the State Wide Planning Program. He was a member and Past President of the Middletown Rotary Club and a member of the Newport and the Portsmouth Chambers of Commerce. Larry was a member of the Artillery Company of Newport; the Seven Castles Club; the Knights of Columbus; the V F W of Middletown, as well as numerous other historical and governmental groups.He is also survived by his daughter Susan A. Nunes of New London, CT; his daughter Diane Francis Kerins and her husband, Brian Kerins of Houston, TX; his daughter Theresa M. Kalil and her husband, Chris Kalil of Middletown RI and his daughter Mary Ellen Helger and her husband, Norman Helger of Portsmouth, RI, his sister Anna Flaherty of Middletown, RI, and his sister Edna North of Portsmouth, RI.Larry's surviving family also includes granddaughter Kim Traylor and grandson Kevin Kerins of Atlanta, Ga; granddaughter Kate George and her husband, Christopher George of Hampton, VA, Krystal Leslie and her husband, Eldon Leslie of Summershade, Ky; grandson Norman Helger, Jr, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and granddaughter Candice Kalil and grandson Jacob Kalil of Middletown, RI. Larry's great grand children are John Paul and David George of Hampton, VA, great granddaughter Madeline, and great grandsons Harrison and Jackson Traylor of Atlanta, GA and great granddaughter Klaire Leslie of Summershade, Ky.Larry was predeceased by his sister Agnes Cayer and his son Francis Nunes.
