Horace Simmons

Newport, RI - Horace Simmons, 83, of Fillmore Street, Newport, RI, died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Kindred Hospital, Stoughton, MA. He was the husband of Barbara L. (Jenkins) Simmons. Born in Albany, GA on July 4, 1928, he was the son of the late Virdell Williams. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years. He graduated from New England Technical School with a Degree in Electronics and from Johnson and Wales with a Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Simmons retired from the Diebold Company after 25 years. He was a active Mason, the first in R.I. to obtain the York Rite the highest you can go in Masonry. He was a member of Stone Mill Lodge #3, Past Master, Constintine Temple #14, Past Potentate and Past Imperial Deputy of Desert. H.P. Imperial Potentate, Past C.I., Mt. Sinai Consistory #2, P.H. Grand Commandery Knights Temple as E. G. Chief Engineer, Past W.P. Queen Esther Chapter 112 and P.W. G. P. Order of Eastern Stars of R.I., a member of the V.F.W. Arthur Burton Post 447, Past State Commander of V.FW of R.I., a member of the Mason Houses in Boston, a life member of N.A.C.C.P., a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #183 and Past Exalted Ruler of the Newport Elks #104. Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his children, Sonya Gordon and Horace Simmons, Jr. of Newport, RI, his grandchildren, Phoenix Simmons and Jada Simmons, his sister-in-laws, Dorothy Saunders of Gary, IN, Loretta Jenkins of Newport, RI and Marcella Jenkins of Tucson, AZ and a host of nieces and nephews.He was the brother-in-law of the late George Jenkins and Alton Jenkins. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, from 5-8pm, in the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at 11:00AM in the Community Baptist Church.Burial with Military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
